Yes gallery is only available in the sidebar as of 4.4. I should correct this statement as the gallery has been in the sidebar since 4.1, but only exclusively in the sidebar since 4.4, so it would be good to test 4.1 to 4.3 to see if this is a regression on the Unity desktop environment.
