I have never done this, but apparently, this is possible via a script that
installs certain fonts, if my reading of comment 4 in bug 94114 is correct. At
some stage, we removed the  "fall back to system font" check option in the
Preferences - View (whatever magic that happened to work, I don't know).

As LibreOffice on OSX doesn't correctly support all of the fonts that a user
can install on his/her OSX, it appears that these get incorrectly substituted
with some symbol font in dialogs and UI elements. That is my theory, I have no
empricial evidence to back it up though.
