I also tried with Lubuntu, but couldn't reproduce despite all my attempts. Maybe it's some combination of theme/fonts? Can you state the exact theme/fonts that in use on your system? Also you could try to bisect [1]. This could give us some hints on what is causing this problem. (And BTW - no idea if this is related, but the minimum supported resolution according to [2] is 1024x768, so you're out of luck here.)
