I am also experiencing this problem, following a recent upgrade to Ubuntu
16.04. The recovery wizard opens, but the window is slow to respond to user
input, and most of the window is solid black (some kind of rendering problem).
After clicking any button, the session crashes and dumps me out to the login
screen soon after.
I have tried trashing my user profile. Writer then starts up normally, as the
recovery wizard does not run. A similar crash can be made to occur if I then
attempt to insert a special character, however. The special character window is
slow to open and respond, is partially black, and then crashes me out to the
login screen again after a few seconds.
