Thanks a lot. That explains why you cannot modify the master in the way I tried
to. I still don't fully understand the interplay between master slides and
layouts, but that's more an issue of the documentation than the program itself.
The question how to create own layouts arises as well, but the existing layouts
should cover at least 95% of all relevant cases. Therefore, it is surely not
worth investing time in that.
