I have understood that now it is handled according to ODF specifications, while previously this was not the case. When opening < 3.5 odt files in >= 3.5.3 the svg is (or should be) converted to the new format. This causes opening again in < 3.5 (i.e. 3.2.1 or 3.4.4) to look broken. Note: I am not sure, but this conversion does not always seem to work. However templates (ott) are not handled this way and remain broken. The following workaround may help you as it helps me in some cases. Open a new document based on the template in < 3.5 (e.g. 3.4.4) and save as normal document (odt). Open the odt in >= 3.5.3 and save as template (ott). The template should now work fine in > 3.5.
