After trying the following things after the problem occurred, it did not
resolve (the dots did not disappear): (1) Closing and reopening the slide
preview pane. (2) Editing the slide. (3) reloading the file with "File>Reload"
in the toolbar, which seems to refresh the slide previews. (4) Closing and
reopening the file. (5) Adding a new slide. (6) Restarting LibreOffice
(surprisingly).
