The "grey box" is a non-printing indicator that a field is present or a
protected formatting mark has been applied as here.
Distinct from Non-Printing Characters button toggle, or <Ctrl>+<F10> shortcut,
the field indicator is benign and will not impact printing or export. They can
be suppressed from view with the View -> Field Shading toggle, or its
<Ctrl>+<F8> shortcut.
