Sorry, but since rebooting my system a few times, and restarting libreoffice
3.5, it now works as it did in libo 3.4.

However it would be much better to by default use the backspace/delete key to
delete a cell unconditionally, since it is large and in a standard location,
and the tiny delete key whose location varies from keyboard to keyboard, to
delete a cell selectively.
That is how most editing applications work, and not only OpenOffice.
It is much more user-friendly.

The "heritage mode" is a workaround, but since its' stated purpose is to keep
OpenOffice style shortcut keys, a lot of people are being unnecessarily forced
to use those shortcut keys, which is likely to make end-user support more
complicated.
