It all depends on the underlying database engine "obviously". But basically in the SQL standard TIME is indeed a clock time (the time part of a full datetime/timestamp). For a duration, type INTERVAL seems more appropriate. Except that HSQLDB 1.8 (used as our embedded HSQL) does not support that datatype.
