I cannot be sure that the behavior changed when using a certain version. When I
encountered this issue I was combining several documents in one, "that's
something I don't usually do, but when I do, I find bugs" (apparently).
Thus, I don't know if the problem is present in older versions and never
noticed, sorry. However, something I noticed is that even when using
libreoffice with a .doc file created in LO itself, the plugin of Mendeley pops
up a warning message. I assume it's because the plugin was made to work on .odf
files, nonetheless, it ends up working as well.
Again, the problem starts when the text is copied from a .doc file made in or
edited in a non-LO suite.
