The ODF standard doesn't cover symlinks, yes, because it doesn't have to.
That's not its area. File storage isn't what it covers. Don't confuse different
things.

The LO behaves correctly with symlinks on all platforms as designed. That some
OS made the feature more visible, doesn't mean that this feature magically must
start working *like another different unrelated feature*. Symlinks are
different, and that is very good, because provides other possibilities for
those who need them. If you need different operation, use different feature -
shortcut.

Creating an extra mode that would also require specific training is even worse
idea.

I suggest to close it again as notabug, and stop the reopening wars.
