            Bug ID: 104716
Summary: General performance problems - UI freezes, slow
                    scrolling, etc.
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: 5.0.6.3 release
          Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: UI
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Description:
There is a widespread and critical issue that makes LO unusable with relatively
big/complex documents.

I've tried it with Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10, with different computers (e.g. Xeon
32GB RAM 1TB SSD)...

I have problems with the UI freezing in Writer and Impress when opening a big
file (e.g. with a bunch of 1MB images, and/or a big number (~50) of Mendeley
references), or various mid-sized files, to the point it becomes unusable.

For example, having a few relatively big .odp files opened and copying slides
between them completely freezes the UI for minutes at a time, and it becomes
progressively worst with each copy/paste operation.

In Ubuntu, this happens with LO 5.2.2.2, the 5.3 Beta2, 5.0.6... Getting rid of
libreoffice-gtk* helps a bit, but scrolling is still a pain (particularly in
the image dense areas of the document), etc. Increasing memory available does
not seem to help.

In Windows 10 with LO 5.2.3 and one of such "complex" documents (again, a dozen
of 1MB images and Mendeley references), scrolling is sluggish . Zooming out so
I would see 4/8 pages in the screen makes scrolling terribly slow.

If I recall correctly, I've been having LO performance issues roughly since LO
5.1 arrived.

I am attaching an anonymized version of one of these documents, but in my
experience (and other colleagues), this happens with any .odp, ppt, doc, etc.
with lots of images, etc.

Steps to Reproduce:
A) .odt files
1. Open complex document (with lots of images)
2. Zoom out so you can see 8 pages at once
3. Scroll down

B) .odp files
1. Open 2 .odp with lots of images (e.g. 50 slides with a ~1MB image each)
2. Copy Alternativellypaste multiple slides from one to the other multiple
times

Actual Results:
A) .odt files
Scrolling is very slow

B) .odp files
UI freezes

Expected Results:
A) Smooth scrolling

B) No freezing

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes. This happens with a fresh computer
