--- Comment #1 from Terrence Enger <[email protected]> ---
Working in debian-stretch with daily Linux dbgutil bibisect repository
version 2017-01-01, in a new worksheet, I observe ...

In Calc, I selected cells B2:C3 and applied a 5-point border
    around the group.

The program displays the visible border centered over the implicit
border around the group, i.e., half inside B2:C3 and half in the
horizontally and vertically surrounding cells, i.e., B1:C1, D2:D3,
    B4:C4, A2:A3.

The program does not display the part of the visible border which
    would fall in the cornerwise adjacent cells, i.e. A1, D1, D4, A4.

    However, in .pdf export, ...

      - if the surrounding cells have no border specified, then the
border around B2:C3 is complete, even showing "mitred"
        corners.

      - if the surrounding cells have border specified, then the
border around B2:C3 is rendered as on the screen.

I agree that the handling of cornerwise adjacent cells is strange,
especially as pdf output differs from the screen rendering. However,
I am leaving status UNCONFIRMED, as I am not sure what the correct
behaviour would be.
