Thanks for the reply.  When I run your suggestion, I get the message:
'Unable to find a source package for libreoffice', 
same if I change to libreoffice-5-2 or libreoffice-5-3.

This problem began while using LO 5.2 which had been running just fine for
several months.  A friend told me that LO 5.3 was available so I installed that
- same problem.  I performed the purge so as to clear the system of all LO
associated files (at least to the best of my knowledge).  

I have just now used:
'sudo apt-get install libreoffice'
which appears to have re-installed LO 5.3

I still get the same error message when I attempt to start LO.
