Could confirm this buggy behavior for internal HSQLDB.
Created a table, saved.
Saved database.
Added a new field to the table, saved.
Close the database and answer to the appearing dialog: Yes, please save.
LO hangs.
Tested with LO 5.3.0.3, 64bit rpm Linux (OpenSUSE 42.1)
