I don't think there's any super mystery here, the sidebar is just tearing down
and recreating oodles of widgets on every context change. Some of the widgets
are higher cost than others, so f.e. the color one might be quite heavy weight
so it could be that reworking the palette loading would make it faster. Or not
throwing away the widgets, just hiding them to avoid recreating them later is
the way to go.
