Sorry it's taken me so long to say "thank you" for that last piece of
information, but, er, thank you.
A few observations:
- If the heavy CPU usage really does relate to measuring text in order to
produce a comment box of the appropriate size, that provides a possible
explanation of why Gnumeric and Excel are able to perform faster, since they
both appear to leave the appropriate sizing of the comment boxes for the user
to do manually.
- Shortly after that trace was posted, a patch was posted on here that was
supposed to mitigate the particular issue revealed in the trace. Do any (or
all) currently widely-available builds of LO contain that patch?
- Since both Peter and I have vague memories that the performance was better
before we upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04, my next move is going to be to
downgrade back to 14.04 (the LO build ID in which is 1:4.2.8-0ubuntu5). I'll
let y'all know whether it helps.
