Thanks for the quick reply. Turns out I was applying "paragraph" styles when I
should have been applying character styles.

The only bug is in the help manual.

It currently reads:

How to apply a style:

1.) Select the text. To apply a Character Style to one word, click the word. To
apply a Paragraph Style, click the paragraph.
2.) Double-click the style in the Styles and Formatting window.


This is inadequate. For clarity this should read:

How to apply a style:

Character Style:

1.) Select the text, word or letter. 

2.) Choose "Character Style" (the symbol 'A' (Text Symbol) in the Styles and
Formatting side pane or window and double click the selected style from the
list in the Styles and Formatting pane or window. 

Paragraph Style:

1.) Select or place the cursor in the paragraph. 

2.) Click the Paragraph Symbol in the Styles and Formatting side pane and
double click the selected style from the list in the Styles and Formatting pane
or window.
