That is the point, you can not. Hence my assessment this is not a bad thing and
a WONTFIX of rolling it back, but we'll let the devs decide that ;-)

DirectWrite has more completely replaced comparable GDI calls, and now at
5.3.2.2 the Default and CPU rendering matches the rendering as for OpenGL. That
is intended and by design, but there is agreement that the DirectWrite calls
need attention. 

It remains to resolve is if the DirectWrite calls can be made more functional
for earlier Windows--notably XP, or if support for XP will be dropped. And to
determine if a buffering scheme similar to OpenGL must be implemented for the
Default rendering to remove the flicker of bug 107024
