Personally, I think this is a WONTFIX. I work a lot with master documents and I
never needed such a behavior. Quite the contrary, the auto-update mechanism in
MSO Word is horrible because it destroys every manual changes and other fine
adjustments in TOCs of sub-documents and master documents when opening the
file.
An extra option (suggested in comment 3) in the dialog window when opening a
master document would be ideal and a compromise, but is it really necessary?
