Changing the version of the operating system is a terrible thing which might
even require to obtain new licencing information for Mathematica.
I downgraded to Version: 5.1.6.2
Build-ID: 1:5.1.6~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial2
CPU-Threads: 2; BS-Version: Linux 4.8; UI-Render: Standard;
Gebietsschema: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); Calc: group
which is the "natural one" for Xubuntu 16.04 and which shows the same problem
on my Xubuntu 16.04.
Then I posted a bug report on launchpad:

LO in an LTS version of (X)ubuntu should not have a bug which reduces the
usability of this very popular program.
