Further information.
The versions installed on my two machnes were selected automatically by the
Synaptic Package Manager from the relevant repositories. But I've now
downloaded version 5.4 directly from the website
(LibreOffice_5.4.0_Linux_x86_deb.tar.gz) and installed it from the command line
alongside 5.3.
The bug doesn't appear in 5.4, but remains in 5.3.
