Sorry, but one thing is not clear to me:
Regarding to your original bug report you have the problems with older
odt-docments (you mentioned "earlier version of writer")
the attachemnt in comment 3 is a doc-file.
Do you want to open old doc-files or odt-files?
If you have a lot of old doc-files, it might be easier to use the
file-converter:
File => Wizards => document converter
Have you ever tried it?
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to
'UNCONFIRMED' after providing the informations
