You can use them, if you have a table without borders. I must admit, I don't
know, why it is necassary to differ between table without borders and
overwriting borders. Wozld be more userfriendly, if you can also overwrite
borders without pressing shift. Might be a proposal for an enhancement. But I
hven't checked, if this proposal already exists.
