Actually, a VLC backend exists, but it is incomplete and abandoned. It was the
result of GSoC 2013: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/GSoC/2013
Over the years I have tried to recruit new developers to work on a new
implementation based on VLC's new official C++ bindings library:
https://code.videolan.org/videolan/libvlcpp

I encourage anyone interested in this feature to continue recruiting people to
re-do this, targeting the upcoming VLC 3.0.
