Tried 5.2.7.2 and it works as expected. It takes a little longer to start than
the currently installed version (AppImage issue?), but there is no extra delay
opening documents and having a card insert into the reader or not has no effect
on anything. Furthermore, the card reader does no react to opening documents
(led stays on all the time, not blinking, when a card is in the reader) at all.
Tried 4.4.7.2 as well, but it won't start. It does show the "LibreOffice / The
Document Foundation" splash for a little while, but then dies away. Doesn't
give any informative error messages.
