These buttons only work with special "outline" text boxes, not with normal text
boxes. i.e. in Impress from the menu choose Slide > Layout > Title, Content. It
will replace the big text box (that has "Click to add Text") with an outline
text box, which will work with the sidebar buttons. When selecting such text
box, the status bar says that "Outline Text selected", while for normal text
boxes it says "Text Frame selected".
