Since reporting the bug I upgraded my OS to Xubuntu 18.04LTS with LibreOffice:

Build ID: 1:6.0.3-0ubuntu1
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 4.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-GB (en_GB.UTF-8); Calc: group
The bug does not occur on this setup.
