My apologies, I left out a vital piece of information.
To clarify the issue further:
This only occurs when the line still retains characters. Empty lines do in fact
return to the margin with a second backspace.
I'm unsure if this is in fact a bug or requires a feature request. Either way
it needs to be fixed, poor UX consistency like this only serves to hamper our
efforts.
