The wrong version of Java is loading. I have another program which depends upon Java SE 5.0, and for that to run it was necessary to alter the default version from 6.0 to 5.0. For me, the solution was as follows: Go to Utilities | Java Preferences | General, and drag the lines for Java SE 6.0 64-bit and 32-bit to the top of the list. LibreOffice then runs normally.
