Further experimentation revealed that
1. saving the DOCX file as ODT
2. closing LibreOffice (no soffice processes remain)
3. starting LibreOffice (new soffice process)
4. opening the converted ODT file (from step 1)
results in the same behavior with 100% CPU utilization.
