I just tried it on 6.0.7.3 (stable), and the file is loaded correctly
It fails in 6.1.4.2 as I originally reported.
I also tried 6.2.0.2, and the problem is still there

This is not a rendering problem.  I don't think  it has anything to do with the
graphics stack.  This is file corruption on load.  It does not appear in the
stable released versions.
