I discovered the cause of the problem: there were two documents which although
only a few pages long had Track Changes enabled. I disabled Track Changes in
them and reimported all of the subdocuments into the masterdocument.
LibreOffice Writer was now responsive and ran smoothly when working with the
6k-page masterdocument.
