Yes I did and the output from my console:
:~$ SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 soffice                                          
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
Please ensure that a JVM and the package libreoffice-java-common
is installed.
If it is already installed then try removing
~/.libreoffice/3/user/config/javasettings_Linux_*.xml

I do have "libreoffice-jave-common" installed.  Also in the above message "try
removing ~/.libreoffice/3/user/config/javasettings_Linux_*.xml", I found that
/3/ on my system was /4/ and I have also removed that file.

These changes have made no difference to what I am observing.
