it turns out that while it started to crash with
18765b9fa739337d2d891513f6e2fb7c3ce23b50 the problem is really that the table
isn't properly formatted; if that is fixed the crash no longer happens.
it's hard to avoid the crash otherwise as updating view starts formatting at
the cursor position, at the end of the document, and goes backwards, which is
going to run into trouble sooner or later as the assumption is that the layout
was fully calculated up to the visible page.
