I'm having a similar problem. This triggers on 1 XLS file I opened from a
client - all other XLS files on my system seem to work fine. Unfortunately, I
can't provide the XLS file as it contains user/pass information that cannot be
made public.

When I open the file, LibreOffice opens a "Text Import" screen. I've tried a
multitude of different options, but the end result is the "data" comes up as
being corrupted. (I've tried different charsets, like UTF-8, to no avail -
UTF-8 just brings the data to come up as those standard unicode "boxes".)

Opening the file in a hex editor, I do notice that it looks quite a bit
different from another XLS file I have (that opens fine). I can see the data in
here, but its offset like an XLS file but it seems to be offset a little
differently. (Sorry, very limited hex/xls experience...)

Let me know if there's any way for me to help. Again, unfortunately I can't
provide this file but I would if I could.
