I've found a work-around.  I was able to open the problem spreadsheet just fine
in gnumeric.  I then did a save-as.  Gnumeric gave me two options for ODS
files:
ODF/OpenOffice with foreign elements
ODF/OpenOffice without foreign elements

If I saved it with foreign elements, LibreOffice couldn't open it.  If I did it
wihtout foreign elements, then libreoffice can open it (though it looks
different, the borders on cells are very different).  I'm not sure how
"foreign" elements would have even been introduced as LibreOffice was the only
program I EVER used to work on or edit the file.
