I have tried the provided functionality out again together with the software
combination “LibreOffice Calc 6.3.3.1-861.1”.
I can choose an example file like
“https://help.libreoffice.org/6.3/media/files/scalc/en-GB/pivot.ods” from a
local directory after pressing the search button in the dialogue “External
data”.

Unfortunately, I get informed by a message dialogue (without a title) that the
object could not be accessed because of missing user rights.
But I find my permissions fine because this test file (and others) can be
successfully opened directly (instead of trying to configure an external file
link).
