In Writer you do not have the menu Format > Area in which you can change the color palette (tab Colors). But you can access the same dialog if you create an object with the drawing tool of Writer, then right click on the form and choose the entry Area... In LibreOffice 4 each module has its own palette (I tested only Writer, Draw and Calc) It would be very interesting if you could try a daily build of LO 4. Best regards.
