This kills our startup time by about a factor of five; A callgrind trace of what is going on is here: http://users.freedesktop.org/~michael/callgrind-startup-master.txt.gz If you gzip -d that and poke at it in kcachegrind you'll see that much of the time is spent fooling around with help with XPaths trying to extract nonsense from them.
