So, what behavior if you show only the wire frames of the inserted images?
Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice Writer -> View: Display 'Images and Objects'
That is the intended means of reducing overhead/memory foot print of
positioning graphics and draw objects on document canvas. The wireframe place
holders are negligible in size and allow manipulation of much larger texts
without having to work in Master Documents.
