I did a quick try with heading numbered and numbrering caption by chapter. The
chapter caption (figure 2-5: dummy image) is lost when I import the sub-doc in
the master (figure 5: dummy image). It's an issue when I create an index of
figures. Out of cursiosity, can I see your document for my reference?

FWIW, I was simply suggesting to name the "custom number range variable", in
each sub-document, in a manner that you don't need to search for and replace
them in the master. (e.g. sub1Figure, sub2Figure, etc.).
