Bug 128803 did a better job of describing and diagnosing my problem than I did.
My pastes come out as an image too, or when I say "paste Special - number" it
does not paste anything because the data I copied was stored as an image. The
other more important observation is that the copy works correctly every second
time. That observation was made here:
