I would prefer an easier handling:
(1) Single click to open recent document or template
(2) Moving around with tab / shift tab to select a recent document or template
by means of keyboard, pressing return to open selected recent document or
template
Don't know what use case has to be covered by a three state value. In any case:
OS specific colors for selections should be used.
