I don't think a shortcut like S~ymbols (Alt+Y) solves the problem, which is
actually accessibility. Question is how average people find and select quickly
a symbol and how disabled users do the job. My answer would be bug 81880, a
search functionality. The default sidebar interaction is clearly defined so
after searching for Foo you would get Foo1..FooX and per tab jump to the list
where the cursor is your friend.
