We have a speed vs memory usage trade-off here. As far as I see, the code we
have today has a short-time cache, cleared at the end of each layout run. That
is quite similar to what e.g. browsers do.

Let's call this an implementation error: if somebody is interested, we could
look at if it's possible to use less memory while maintaining the same
performance, I didn't investigate this direction so far.
