There should be a way to open the spell check dialog to add words to the
dictionary. The dialog does a spell check and closes without the user being
able to work with the dialog. I suggest another spell check icon for manual
spell checking. This would just open the spell check dialog to allow user
modifications to the dictionary, etc.
