i have no memory of that but the description indicates it wasn't actually a
deadlock but a use-after-free locking of a global pthread_mutex - how often
that happens to cause a deadlock is anybody's guess; perhaps try implementing
the suggestion to call _exit() and avoid global dtors that way :)
