As other users have been reporting for many years, it is still impossible to
change the slide number in an Impress presentation. This makes it impossible to
create step animations in which successive slides are identical except for a
few elements that "move". PowerPoint has had this features for years.
LibreOffice Writer has this feature for page numbers. It is a necessary
feature.
